Mount Howard

Mount Howard rises to 8,241 feet in Oregon. The Mount Howard Trail covers 1.0 miles (loop) with about 227 feet of elevation gain — a gradual walk with modest climbing.

The Route

Most of the climbing comes early — the first half of the route does the bulk of the work before the grade eases. The steepest stretch arrives around mile 0.07, gaining roughly 1,000 feet per mile — expect a slow, deliberate pace through here. From the trailhead at about 8,068 feet, the route tops out near 8,209 feet. Along the way the route passes a viewpoint (Royal Purple Overlook) near mile 0.09, a viewpoint (Summit Overlook) near mile 0.28, a viewpoint (Highlands Overlook) near mile 0.37 — useful checkpoints for judging your pace.

Getting There

The trailhead is at 45.26261, -117.17996 (tap for driving directions). It's roughly 125 miles northwest of Boise, Idaho. Arrive early on weekends — trailhead lots at popular peaks fill quickly, and cell service is often unreliable once you leave the highway.

When to Go

Late May through October is the main season. Snow and ice linger into spring and return early in fall at this latitude and elevation; in winter this becomes a different, more serious undertaking requiring traction devices and warm layers.
