The Watchman

The Watchman rises to 8,012 feet in Oregon. The The Watchman Trail covers 1.0 miles round trip (out-and-back) with about 318 feet of elevation gain — a gradual walk with modest climbing.

The Route

Most of the climbing comes early — the first half of the route does the bulk of the work before the grade eases. From the trailhead at about 7,579 feet, the route tops out near 7,897 feet. Along the way the route passes a viewpoint (The Watchman) near mile 0.52 — useful checkpoints for judging your pace.

Getting There

The trailhead is at 42.9345, -122.17013 (tap for driving directions). It's roughly 180 miles south of Portland, Oregon. Arrive early on weekends — trailhead lots at popular peaks fill quickly, and cell service is often unreliable once you leave the highway.

When to Go

Late May through October is the main season. Snow and ice linger into spring and return early in fall at this latitude and elevation; in winter this becomes a different, more serious undertaking requiring traction devices and warm layers.
