Little Devil's Tower

At 7,001 feet, Little Devil's Tower is a summit in South Dakota. The Little Devil's Tower Trail covers 4.3 miles round trip (out-and-back) with about 551 feet of elevation gain — a gradual walk with modest climbing.

The Route

Most of the climbing comes early — the first half of the route does the bulk of the work before the grade eases. The steepest stretch arrives around mile 1.23, gaining roughly 1,400 feet per mile — expect a slow, deliberate pace through here. From the trailhead at about 6,171 feet, the route tops out near 6,722 feet. Along the way the route passes a rest area (stone bench) near mile 0, a viewpoint (Cathedral Spires) near mile 1.73, a viewpoint (Needles other eye) near mile 1.73 — useful checkpoints for judging your pace.

Getting There

The trailhead is at 43.84614, -103.55938 (tap for driving directions). It's roughly 25 miles southwest of Rapid City, South Dakota. Arrive early on weekends — trailhead lots at popular peaks fill quickly, and cell service is often unreliable once you leave the highway.

When to Go

Late May through October is the main season. Snow and ice linger into spring and return early in fall at this latitude and elevation; in winter this becomes a different, more serious undertaking requiring traction devices and warm layers.

The Moderate rating comes from the National Park Service difficulty formula, which weighs total distance against elevation gain. Most hikers should budget about 1.5 hours of moving time; add margin for breaks, photos and the descent.
